Are you ready Kentucky?

(5-5-2016) SANTA ANA, CA – The popularity of Radial Tire racing continues to grow, and while many feel that tire size is no longer a true limiting factor on performance, fans continue to want more, more, MORE!

Grassroots racing is experiencing a huge lift due to these wild boys of the eighth-mile – pushing the extreme limits of horsepower and handling as each week it seems elapsed time and miles-per-hour records are being broken.

It’s that balls-to-the-wall approach which has elevated classes such as the NMCA’s Mickey Thompson Radial Wars class to new heights. High three-second ETs at over 200 mph – cars skating from side to side – most of the time only being steered by the power of the rear wheels, as the front wheels very rarely have much contact with the track. It’s that type of racing which takes a special breed of driver.

From the fans... [Read More]

O’Rourke chasing ‘one percenters’ at Nitro Champs

(5-5-2016) EASTERN CREEK, NSW – For Grant O’Rourke, this weekend’s Nitro Champs are all about making sure every small part in the OMS machine is working at its best as he looks to chase down John Zappia.

The Nitro Champs are the latest round in the 400 Thunder Series, and will be held across May 7-8.

O’Rourke is currently less than 100 points adrift of John Zappia in the 400 Thunder Pro Slammer standings.

“When it comes to drag racing, often it is the littlest thing that can make all the difference in ultimate success or soul-crushing disappointment,” said O’Rourke.

“Zapp (John Zappia) has said on a few occasions that his undeniable success comes down to all of those ‘one percent’ things that make the difference, and there is no secret that he is the one we want to catch, and that we want to beat.

Mike Gittings named official NHRA Chief Starter

(5-5-2016) GLENDORA, CA – NHRA officials announced today that Mike Gittings, most recently the chief starter in NHRA’s Northwest Division and a certified team member of the NHRA Safety Safari presented by AAA, has been named the official NHRA Chief Starter, one of the most storied positions in all of NHRA Drag Racing.

Gittings is the fourth chief starter in the sport’s 65-plus year history, following the late Buster Couch (1955-1996), Rick Stewart (1996-2011) and the late Mark Lyle (2012-2016). He will begin his tenure at the important post starting with the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals, May 13-15 at Atlanta Dragway in Georgia.

Gittings served as the interim Chief Starter under difficult circumstances in early April at the DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas following Lyle’s sudden death... [Read More]

Warren Johnson: IHRA’s Pro Stock Professor

(5-4-2016) NORWALK, OH – Warren Johnson, aka “The Professor” is, for many doorslammer fans, the John Force of Pro Stock racing. He is known for speaking his mind often without a filter. He will have an opinion on about any subject in drag racing from the management to track prep to even the track food, and there is never a doubt on where Warren Johnson stands on any subject.

There is also no doubt that he will go down in history as one of the IHRA’s premier Pro Stock racers. In a relatively short IHRA career in which he was a full-time IHRA racer from 1979 to 1983, Johnson went to 23 Pro Stock final rounds and won 14 times. In that time period, Johnson had a performance streak unequaled in Mountain Motor Pro Stock history by anyone except Rickie Smith.

During that five-year span, he drove to back-to-back IHRA Mountain Motor World Championship... [Read More]

Cavallo championship full circle from Super Stock to Pro Stock

(5-4-2016) RIDLEYTON, SA – Three-times consecutive Super Stock Champion (2008-2010) Nino Cavallo has added an ANDRA Drag Racing Series Pro Stock Championship to his resume following his hometown triumph at the Australian Nationals in January.

Although he would have liked to finish the job at the ANDRA Championship Grand Final earlier this month, a semi final in Sydney last November and the win at Calder Park Raceway in January were enough to guarantee his first Group One title.

“I'm very happy to win a Championship in Pro Stock, that's something I thought we would not achieve to be honest with you,” said Cavallo.

“It's the hardest class we have run in. Compared to Super Stock Championships it's a lot harder, not saying Super Stock was a walk in the park.

“Having only two rounds made it a bit... [Read More]
» John Kapiris: 2015/2016 ANDRA Super Sedan Champion
Johnny’s nervous wait for number four

(5-4-2016) RIDLEYTON, SA – Already a three-time consecutive Super Sedan Champ, John Kapiris went into the ANDRA Championship Grand Final in Adelaide aiming to make Super Sedan history.

If he could successfully defend his crown yet again, he would become the first Super Sedan racer to win four titles in a row and the first Sportsman racer of any bracket to win four or more Championships in a row since Graeme Silk achieved five successive Modified Championships between 1982-1986.

It ended up being a very nervous wait as the usually consistent Kapiris level on 300 points with George Tipouikidis entering the final round, was eliminated by Lance Larcombe in Round 2 of eliminations.

Tipouikidis himself had already been sent packing in Round 1 but the ace in the pack was the quiet achiever Steve Hunt.

The underdog went about... [Read More]

Matt Forbes record John Storm Memorial points haul

(5-4-2016) RIDLEYTON, SA – Newly crowned Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series Modified Champion Matt Forbes (Ballarat, Victoria) has capped a stunning season with a record points haul in the calculations for the John Storm Memorial Trophy.

The prestigious award is presented to the Sportsman racer who amasses the most total points accrued over the entire Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series.

Forbes stellar season included two double victories winning Modified and Super Gas in the same event at Portland and Calder Park becoming the first Sportsman racer to achieve the feat before repeating to become the first Sportsman racer to do it twice in one season.

Racing across three brackets at selected events, Forbes accrued 1000 points in Top Sportsman, Modified and Super Gas.

Farber qualifies at NHRA Pro Mod race in Texas, hosts fan meet & greet

(5-3-2016) BAYTOWN, TX – Pete Farber qualified well at the second NHRA Pro Mod race of the season in a large, highly competitive field at the 29th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas on April 29-May 1, 2016.

The weekend began with Pro Mod qualifying on Friday, and Farber started out with a solid first session. His supercharged CRC Automotive Brākleen ’69 Dodge Daytona put down a 1.00-second sixty-foot time and the front-half of the run was promising, but the car started to fall off by the half-track mark and clocked a time of 6.016 at 243.99 mph. Farber was sixteenth after round one, and vowed he’d improve his position so as not to be on the precarious bump spot by the time eliminations began. Later, Farber pulled into the left lane to make his second qualifying hit.... [Read More]

Callaway scores first win in Texas

(5-3-2016) BAYTOWN, TX – The NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway, saw local racer Lee Callaway upset 2015 national champion Joey Severance for his first career win in Top Alcohol Dragster. Despite this being his first-ever final round appearance in the racing class, the Baytown, Texas, resident showed no signs of nervousness as he made his best pass of the weekend.

Callaway opened the final round with a small lead after posting a quicker reaction time, then pulled away to earn the Wally after Severance started hazing the tires at approximately 400 feet. Final round results were a 5.285 second, 271.84 mph pass for Callaway, compared to Severance's 6.610 second, 141.46 mph finish.

In Comp Eliminator, veteran racer David Rampy of Piedmont, Al., collected his 91st overall career win, with 73 having been earned in the Comp Eliminator racing... [Read More]

(5-3-2016) BROWNSBURG, IN – At the first NHRA North Central Lucas Oil Divisional of 2016, Mick Snyder and the Powersource Transportation Team traveled to Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series - Ray Skillman Spring Spectacle of Speed. The 5-time Season Champs and their unconventional Supercharged, ComSyncEFI Electric Fuel Injected Top Sportsman combination gained a lot of exposure and posted combination best numbers on their way to the Number 1 Qualifying Position. During final eliminations, the team fell short in the first round, but it was still a successful NHRA season opener at the famed quarter-mile facility for the Snyder Motorsports Orange Menace team, who picked up the Top Sportsman Fast Four “win”.

During the Friday qualifying session, the Powersource Transportation Corvette... [Read More]

Grace Porter's recipe for success

(5-2-2016) MELBOURNE, VIC – Being part of a drag racing family, Grace Porter was all set to start racing Junior Dragsters when she was 6.

“I grew up going to the races with my dad every weekend. He races Stock Eliminator in the USA. My parents had my first Junior Dragster built when they first came out in 1992. I was 6. Shortly after we got the car, NHRA made the ruling that you had to be 8 to race!”

Grace’s admiration and respect for the sport came about from having parents who race, as well as them running a drag strip in the early 80’s. “Both my parents raced NHRA Stock and Super Stock Eliminator.”

We asked Grace “Why Pro Stock”. Her response…..”I love that Pro Stock is the ultimate driver’s category as well as the top class showing innovation. As a child I saw Warren Johnson run the first 200mph pass at Dinwiddie and was... [Read More]

C. Force, Kalitta and Anderson race to victory at NHRA SpringNationals in Houston

(5-1-2016) BAYTOWN, TX – Courtney Force raced to her first Funny Car victory of the season Sunday at the NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway. It is the fifth consecutive NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event that has featured a female winner.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) also were winners at the sixth of 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events on the season.

Force posted a 3.913-second pass at 327.90 mph in her Traxxas Chevrolet Camaro SS to defeat No. 1 qualifier Tim Wilkerson, who powered his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang to a 3.943 at 323.81. This is Force’s eighth career win and first since 2014 in St. Louis. She now shares the Funny Car points lead with Wilkerson.

J. Whiteley wins NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Series event in Houston

(5-1-2016) BAYTOWN, TX – Jim Whiteley earned his first career win Sunday at the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing is the second of 10 events on the season.

Whiteley, appearing in his first ever final round, defeated two-time world champion Rickie Smith to bring home the Wally trophy.

Whiteley’s J&A Service/Y-NOT Racing ’69 Chevrolet Chevelle shut off shortly after leaving the starting line, however, Smith’s late model IDG Chevy Camaro was disqualified after it shook and made an immediate right turn to cross into the right lane and hit the right wall before turning back across the lanes to hit the left wall.

The Pro Mod Drag Racing Series returns May 13-15 at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA... [Read More]
