(2-21-2008) CENTER MORICHES, NY – The CITGO Liquefied Petrolium Division, who has been the primary sponsor on IHRA Pro Stock racer John Montecalvo’s car for 10 seasons, will not be back with his race team in 2008.
“CITGO was sold to NuStar Energy, and in my conversations with the NuStar group they expressed that at this time there is currently no interest in any drag racing exposure,” Montecalvo said. “I am grateful to have had such a loyal, active sponsor for all these years. One of the lessons I’ve learned in life is that when one door closes another usually opens. My team is very determined to be successful and has the will and desire to find its way.”
Montecalvo has a brand new Rick Jones Chevy Cobalt with two new Sonny Leonard motors. He is looking for a modest amount of sponsorship to help out, but fully intends on running the entire 2008 Knoll Gas Nitro Jam schedule.
“In the duration I am not going to let this set us back,” Montecalvo said. “Right now Lois Anne and I are loading up the Ski-Doo’s and heading up to Old Forge for the weekend to do some snowmobiling. Monday morning I’ll be back at the office making some calls to see what’s available and what our options are. Meanwhile we are still going full speed ahead with our winter test schedule and are confident, that 2008 is going to be a great year!”
