(4-18-2009) WILLOWBANK, QLD – Edge of your seat qualifying in Pro Stock and Top Doorslammer for the Castrol EDGE Tin Top Titles at Willowbank Raceway have preceded tomorrow’s Elimination rounds tonight – seeing the Pro Stock field separated by less than a tenth of a second.
Sunday’s Elimination runs for the Professional Categories of Top Doorslammer, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Bike as well as feature categories Pro Street and Mod Street will take place at 12.30pm, 2.00pm and 3.45pm for an early afternoon finish, with Sportsman action starting from 9.30am.
The Pro Stock field will be led by John Barbagallo after this afternoon’s qualifying saw 16 Pro Stockers whittled to just eight and the Ayr resident separated from eighth spot by just one tenth of a second.
Barbagallo snared the top spot from defending champion Aaron Tremayne with a 7.125 second pass at 191.73 miles per hour in the final qualifier, leaving the younger of the Bundaberg Tremayne brothers in second spot while older brother and current championship leader Tyronne was in fifth.
“It is good to be at the top again after a bit of a lull in the later part of last year,” said Barbagallo.
“The crew have worked really well and I am happy to have been able to get the result for them and for our new sponsors Asset Reliability and Consulting and Fabre Australia as well as Joe Gibbs Driven.
“Tomorrow is going to be tough - with the field so close and so strong it is going to be a day won and lost on the startline that is for sure!”
In eighth position on the ladder for Pro Stock is Mackay’s Scott Porter, who despite originally just missing out on the field with a 7.226s pass was reinstated to Sunday’s program after Jason Hedges retired from the Event with engine damage experienced during the second run of qualifying

“It was a good day for us, we reset the Willowbank Raceway track record (previously held by Judd at 5.907s) and came close to the national record,” said Zappia.
“We have a new sponsor on board – United Industries – who came to see us at Perth last time when we ran a 5.83s, 5.84s and 5.83s, so they brought us luck then and hopefully that can continue now that their name is on the side of the car this weekend!
“We will just be getting in there tomorrow - we need to go rounds, keep gaining points and keep our head above Judd in the chase – he obviously has a lot of work to do now to get back to where they were after their issue.”
In Pro Stock Bike, Townsville’s Michael Gilbertson and his Hogs Breath machine is on top of the qualifying ladder ahead of Peter Cochrane who is making his return to the professional ranks this weekend.
Pro Street and Mod Street qualifying will continue tomorrow morning, with racing kicking off later in the morning before the Professional finals begin at 12.30pm, continuing at 2.15pm and 3.45pm ready for an early finish.
