Countdown to the Championship Top Five for 2012: Top Sportsman driver Spencer Hyde – Fourth Place

(10-18-2012) CAYUGA, ON – A pair of final round appearances helped Spencer Hyde capture fourth place in points in the 2012 Quick 32 Sports Series championship presented by NAPA Auto Parts.

Now in his sixth year of drag racing, Hyde who competes in the Top Sportsman side of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series with his 1968 Chevy Camaro. He started the series in a Top Dragster but switched over to the doorcar two seasons ago. The present Camaro is capable of quarter-mile times in the high six-second range at speeds approaching 200 mph.

Hyde, from Stratford, Ontario, qualified for all six Quick 32 Sportsman Series races this year, qualifying fourth and going three rounds in the season opener at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park. In the second race, at Martin, Michigan, Hyde took out Dan Aitken Jr of Belle River, Ontario before being eliminated in the second round, At the first Grand Bend race he lost in the first round, but won the Top Sportsman final during the Nitro Nationals at Cayuga, losing the event win to Top Dragster pilot Michael Hinbest of Orangeville, Ontario.

And for the final race, held at Grand Bend, Hyde once again won the Top Sportsman side, and once again was taken out by Hinbest in the final.

The Jerry Bickle Race Cars Camaro is powered by a large 762-cubic inch ERD (Engine Research & Development) engine, running a Coan Engineering transmission and ERD fuel system. The car, owned by parents Peter and Lisa Hyde, is crew chiefed by Ron Hyde. Jack Hyde, Murray Hyde and Peter Hyde are the rest of the team members, along with input and thanks from ERD’s Carl Spiering.

Sponsors for the team include NAPA Auto Parts, Ideal Supply, Hyde Construction, Transit Petroleum, Hyde Electric, Dordan Mechanical, Raedon Excavating, Ronnoco Sales, NA Engineering Associates, Wilhelm Concrete, Steve Smith Construction, Sutton Group (Paul Graham) and Orr Insurance, Coors Light (Jeff Carr), Ramseyer Earthworks, Schultz Plumbing, Remex Trucking, iLOOKABOUT, and the Tim Horton’s at Ontario and Erie in Stratford.
