Morgan ready for speedy Pro Stock racing at Pacific Raceways
(7-30-2012) KENT, WA – Like many folks before him, a trip out West has done wonders for Larry Morgan, driver of the Lucas Oil Ford Mustang.
After round wins in three of the last four races, Morgan has moved into a tie for 11th in the Pro Stock standings and is in striking distance of ninth-place heading into this weekend's O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals.
"We're going rounds right now and that's an important thing," Morgan said. "They are going to set that Countdown field before you know it, and we want to be a part of that."
Morgan and Vieri Gaines are tied for 11th, one point behind 10th-place Jeg Coughlin Jr. and 10 behind ninth-place Ron Krisher.
"That makes us feel good," Morgan said. "We need to continue on that track and get into that Top 10."
There are only three races left before the cutoff for the Countdown to the Championship: Seattle, Brainerd and the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.
Pacific Raceways, with its heavily forested area can cool conditions and quickly turn into a Pro Stock playground. Morgan said he's going to be prepared to see conditions as good better than he's seen in months.
"It's going to be in the low 70s there this weekend," Morgan said. "It'll be better than what we saw in Sonoma, and it was really good there. We're going to have to get some different gears.
"I enjoy racing there and I feel good about the way we've been racing lately. It's going to be fun up there."
Qualifying for the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals get under way at 2 p.m. PDT Friday from Pacific Raceways. Qualifying continues at noon Saturday with eliminations starting at 11 a.m. Sunday. ESPN2 will air the qualifying show at 10:30 p.m. EDT Saturday and the eliminations show at 6 p.m. Sunday.
