Lucas Oil's Morgan elated at making the Countdown in Pro Stock
(9-9-2012) INDIANAPOLIS, IN – With the burden of securing a spot in Pro Stock's Countdown to the Championship over, Larry Morgan is turning his attention to making the Lucas Oil Ford Mustang better and becoming a factor in the postseason.
"It's one weight off our shoulders and a new one on," Morgan said. "But we're ok with that, for sure."
Morgan won his first round matchup with Greg Anderson on Sunday at the 58th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Auto-Plus before falling to Vincent Nobile in the second round at Lucas Oil Raceway.
However Morgan said he's not merely satisfied with making the field. Morgan is already plotting his next moves to improve his Mustang.
"The car gets upset real easy right now," Morgan said. "When it gets upset, it doesn't work worth a darn and we blow the tires off and mess the run up. We'll get that fixed and be ready for these last six races."
Against Anderson, there was no hint of the problem. Both cars were out of the gate at the same time and Morgan sailed on through to a 6.652 second lap at 207.56 mph. Anderson shook the tires and blew up his motor during his lap of 8.674 seconds at 109.51 mph.
In the second round, the tire shake came back against Nobile. The second year driver to a slight edge at the starting line, and cruised to a 6.593 second pass at 209.46 mph. Morgan fought the tire shake and finished in 6.687 at 207.37 mph.
"Our best race motor is hurt right now," Morgan said. "We'll have to take it back to the shop and freshen it up before we head down to Charlotte."
Morgan is going to start the Countdown in ninth place in the standings. When the points are reset he'll be 100 points behind leader Allen Johnson, instead of 821.
Next for Morgan and the Lucas Oil Mustang is the O'Reilly Auto Parts Nationals in Charlotte starting on Friday.
