In pursuit of a title, Line needs to go “serious rounds”
(10-23-2012) MOORESVILLE, NC – Reigning NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock Champion Jason Line heads into this weekend’s 12th annual Big O Tires NHRA Nationals believing a win here on The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and another in the season’s last race could lead to a title for the Summit Racing driver.
“Obviously we do have to win some serious rounds; basically we have to win both these last two races,” said the Summit Racing driver. “But it's going to take a monumental effort and it's going to take probably some misfortune on (points leader) Allen Johnson’s part.
“With the Countdown format, the playoff style format, it's all about peaking at the right time. We still haven't quite hit our peak yet, but I don't think it's too late. We're definitely getting faster each week, and right now we've got a pretty bad, fast Summit Racing Camaro. It’s definitely not over yet. We're definitely going to give Allen a tough time the next couple of races.”
During the last race, Line rode into the third round from his pole-qualifying position with one of the fastest cars on the property before a stuck line-loc ended stopped his pursuit of Johnson, who left Reading, Pa., holding an 82-point lead.
“I'd rather trade places with Allen, but at the same time, it's a nice challenge, and it'll be fun to see if we can make something happen,” he added.
Racing in Las Vegas is special for Line, who clinched his championship last year with a semifinal finish here.
“Vegas is a pretty special place for me,” he said. “My team owner Ken Black and his wife Judy are from here. The Summit Cars seem to do well here. I guess we like trying to show off for Ken and Judy. It's been a very good place for both Greg and me, and I hope this year will be no exception.”
