Countdown to the Championship Top Five for 2012: PMRA driver Derek Hawker – Third Place
(10-24-2012) CAYUGA, ON – A couple of final-round appearances helped Derek Hawker to finish in third place in the 2012 Pro Modified Racing Association Championship Point Award Series presented by Global Emissions Systems Inc..
The Hawker Racing Corvette Sting Ray Pro Modified qualified for all seven PMRA events this season, starting at the Cayuga Dragway at Toronto Motorsports Park in fourth spot and losing in the semi-final round.
For the next three events, at Martin, Michigan, the Nitro Nationals at Cayuga, and the IHRA Nitro Jam weekend at Grand Bend, Hawker, of Corbyville, Ontario, made the show but was taken out in first-round action.
But Hawker and his Corvette went rounds for the next two races. In the South Coast Community Weekend race, Hawker qualified seventh and took out Rob Atchison of London, Ontario, and 2012 PMRA champion Eric Latino of Whitby, Ontario, to meet up in the final with Jay Santos of Halton Hills, Ontario, who took the win over Hawker.
For the sixth PMRA race, Hawker made the show in eighth spot, and worked his way through to face eventual winner Sam Andreacchi of Toronto, Ontario in the final, and for the final race of the season Hawker qualified fourth and made it to the semi-final round.
Power for the Corvette is provided by an Alan Johnson 526-cubic inch engine with a PSI D Screw Supercharger and Atchison fuel system. The car is a Vanishing Point Pace Cars product, features a Lenco three-speed transmission, and propels Hawker down the quarter-mile in just over six seconds at 235 mph.
Crew chief for the team is Scott Sager, with Corrie Hawker, McKenzie Hawker, Brittany Hawker, Mike McGrath and Eli Mayhew making up the rest of the team. Hawker, who has one PMRA event win to his credit (Cayuga, 2010) and placed second in points that year, is sponsored by Hawker Construction, Pennzoil and Empey Tire.
