Edwards looks for playoff turnaround
(10-25-2012) LAS VEGAS, NV – With a shot at a top five finish in the NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock chase still on the line, Mike Edwards and the Penhall/K&N/Interstate Batteries team are heading to the facility where they have tasted quite a bit of success over the course of the last three seasons.
Edwards has claimed three of the last five titles in Las Vegas, including sweeping both the spring and fall races in 2011.
"After having such success as we've enjoyed the last few seasons, it makes you want to get back to that track and continue the run," Edwards said. "It is always fun coming back as the defending champion, but being able to say we swept both events last year, it gives us all the confidence in the world that we can again make good runs in qualifying and be a strong player come eliminations."
If Edwards can pull off his third victory of 2012, and make it four wins in the last six trips to The Strip At Las Vegas Motor Speedway, it will help his cause in securing a top five spot when the season comes to a close, it will mark the eighth time in his career to finish in the top five. It would only trail his 2009 NHRA Pro Stock championship, his second place last year, and his third-place finish in 1996, and fourth in 2001, 2006, and 2008, and equals his 2003 finish.
"After how this season has transpired and some of the struggles we've encountered, finishing in the top five in the points would be a huge accomplishment," said Edwards. "Sitting only 58 points behind with two races to go, and coming to a track that has been good to us the last few trips, gives us that confidence.
"We know we have to work on making four solid runs in eliminations to grab the third Wally of the year. We are going to focus into the areas that have troubled us and work on taking that negative and make it on of our strengths for the last two stops and into 2013."
