Andy Beal wins Extreme Outlaw Pro Mod Showdown 3
(7-26-2010) BENSON, NC – Saturday July 24th the EOPM put on another awesome Extreme Show at Dunn-Benson Dragstrip but this time in Extreme heat.
When the teams were called to the lanes for Extreme Outlaw Pro Mod qualifying we had Edward Wilson, Dave Leonardo, Dwayne White, Kevin Mayer, Tommy Mauney, Glenn Jones, Jeff Blasi, Buzz Varner, Andy Beal, RB Smith, Brian Williams, Dewayne Silance, Mack Copeland, Ronnie Gardner, Chris Rini, Robert Morris, Kevin Rivenbark, and wild Bill De'Soto all prepared for battle to begin. After the three exciting rounds of qualifying the fans were left in awe as the Extreme Outlaw Pro Mods would once again deliver the promised show at Dunn Benson Dragstrip, with Ronnie Gardner driving the Goad's Racing Teams big nitrous powered '67 Camaro taking the number one qualifying spot. JD Goad and Ronnie Gardner earned a low qualifier plaque, and $200 from both Williams Concrete, and Lake Anna Motorsports for being on top of the final qualifying sheet.
As it was time for the first round of eliminations between the top 8 competitors, no one from the die hard doorslammer fans, and track staff, to the EOPM staff could predict the outcome as the number one qualifier clocked a 4.10 and the number eight qualifier got in the show with a 4.20. "It's real tight when you know these racers, because the last three qualifiers have all been faster recently" said Shawn Kelly of EOPM. The first pair out would be the number four man Andy Beal in his blown '63 Vette who qualified with a 4.120 against the number five man Edward Wilson in his big nitrous powered '41 Willy's who qualified with a 4.121. With a .028 to a .061 Wilson would leave the tree first but shake violently as soon as he turned the clutch loose, while Beal would pedal to a 4.18 pass. Talking with Mr. Wilson later it seems he should have cut his clutch before the event, and did't have time at the track. "I just couldn't take enough clutch out, but its a lesson learned. We had a great time and are pleased with our qualifying effort in this heat" said Wilson. The next pair up for first round would be Dewayne Silance in his Charlie Buck powered '68 Camaro, and Brian Williams in his Blown 05 Vette. Silance the number three man with a 4.114 would get a bye, as Williams the number six man with a 4.133 could not make the call. Always the fierce competitor the hogfarmer would run a 4.09 which would be the first 4.zero pass of the evening, but not the last. The third pair out would pit EOPM North Team, Chris Rini in his Charlie Buck powered Stratus, who was the number two man with a 4.110 against EOPM South team, Buzz Varner in his big nitrous powered 63 Vette, who was the number seven man with a 4.166. Rini would have a slight advantage at the start with a .095 bulb to Varner's .106, but Buzz would get to the finish line first with a 4.112 to Chris's 4.23. This would be the ATI sponsored teams first appearance with the EOPM in the Buck powered Stratus. This would bring up the number one qualifier Ronnie Gardner in the big nitrous assissted Superman '67 Camaro, against the number eight man with a 4.20, RB Smith, in his nitrous powered Virginia Speed Race Cars '63 Vette. Gardener would be forced to lift after severe tire shake, but Smith would cross the center line giving Ronnie Gardner the win. The heads up doorslammer fans lining the fence, and filling the stands in the extreme heat were thrilled, as they were not disappointed by the show the EOPM was putting on.
In the semifinals Andy Beal would be set to face off with Ronnie Gardner while Dewayne Silance would do battle once again with Buzz Varner of the Don Plemmons Racing Team. In the Beal vs Gardner battle, Ronnie would leave the tree first with a .023 light to Andy's .038, but Beal would run an awesome 4.07 to get to the finish line before Gardner's 4.12, as the fans went wild cheering. In the Silance vs Varner battle, Varner would get a slight advantage at the tree with an amazing .006 light to Silance's .019, but Silace would get to the stripe on the far end first with a pedaling 4.33 as Varner was forced to lift. This would set up the supercharged 63 Vette of Andy Beal to go to war against the Charlie Buck Racing Engines powered '68 Camaro of Dewayne Silance who won the last EOPM event. A Nitrous versus Blower finale for the first time this season at Dunn Benson Dragstrip and second time for the EOPM. Kevin Mayer in the blown 41 Willy's went to an EOPM final against Glenn Jones in the Buck powered 63 Vette earlier this season at Northeast Dragway.
As the tree dropped Dewayne Silance would leave first with a .032 light to Andy Beal's .055. At the finish line Beal would pick up the win with a 4.061 over Silance's 4.107 giving the non nitrous assissted teams of the EOPM their first win. "The South wins another one! Whats that 5 wins for the south, and 1 for the north?" said Chris Croom EOPM south adviser.
"This was another awesome event at Dunn Benson Dragstrip with a good car count, and two of our sponsors represented in the finals with Buck Racing Engines, and Beal Racing Engines," said Stuart Williams of EOPM. "Their were some teams such as Ricky Walton, Robert Morris, Glenn Jones, and Dave Leonardo who came out to support us, and hope we can put together a totally separate field of qualifying. We are working on it as the EOPM, and Dunn Benson want all the racers to feel like they can compete here and truly make this the Doorslammer Capitol of the eastcoast. We are also very proud, and happy for Edward Wilson who has come a long way with his program since his first race with us," Williams finished.
We also had several teams compete for the first time and we would like to thank them for bearing the heat with us to give the fans an awesome show. It was Chris Rini, Tommy Mauney, Dwayne White, Robert Morris, and two-time NEOPMA Nitrous Champion Jeff Blasi's first outing with the EOPM and we hope to see them all again as we need them. We also thank Van the Man of Drag Illustrated, Extreme Motorsports, Rupture Street Wear, and Robert Keene Photo's for coming out.
"I look at this race in this extreme heat that made some cancel, and we had many teams who did not make the trip due to the heat, and some because their cars were not ready in time. I would not be surprised to see a car count exceed 25 before the Extreme Outlaw Pro Mod Nationals in October with all this support we are getting from the racers, especially if we can obtain a second qualifying field," said Karon Woodward of EOPM. Many teams competed in their third event with us this weekend, and have become eligible for the EOPM Nationals which is shaping up to be just awesome. Watch for upcoming news as sponsors step up to be apart of this highly anticipated event, and we continue to work hard to be better.
